Hungary

Hungary have the Power of Assimilation.

Even as a Christian nation, old habits die hard - for the Hungarians do not just claim descent from the Magyar hordes who once forged a path of fire and steel across northern Europe just a century ago, but also from the ancient Huns, that scourge of Rome. Whether true or not, the Magyars, despite having been defeated by the Franks less than two centuries ago, have founded instead in the old Roman lands of Pannonia a new kingdom - and perhaps, one of the greatest that Christendom will ever see. For unlike the German Kaiser or the Russian Kynaz, whose nations are on the verge of anarchy, the karol of the Magyars brooks no opposition, but has power over his people unrivalled by no Christian ruler, save possibly the autocrat of the Greeks, to the far south.

It is through such iron-handed rule that Hungary has not only flourished, but also even expanded west into Croatia toward the Adriatic, again, on the backs of horse-borne knights, armed in the arts of lance and bow, just like their distant Magyar and Hunnic ancestors of yore. Yet such achievements attract envy - and Hungary, being the envy of all Central Europe, has many rivals. The Greeks and the Germans, eager for more land despite having conquered the Slavic Obotrites and Bulgars, still continue to hatch attempts within Hungarian lands to unseat the current king - a blind man named Bela, but a brilliant man, no less - while an upstart mob of Italian rustics, the Venetians, have started showing interest in Istria and Dalmatia - regions that are either ruled by the House of Arpad, or ought to be. So gather your weapons, pray to God, the Holy Virgin and the saints, and prepare to channel the spirits of your horse-riding ancestors - for when the rightful lords of the Ten Arrows ride, all Europe must tremble before them!

Faction overview

  • Openness to Migrants: Assimilate cities 4 times faster. Citizens ceated 33% cheaper
  • Absolutism: Military research is 33% cheaper.

Strengths:

Expansive cultural bonuses and enhanced offensive capabilities of cavalry and artillery. Magyar Várispán can be trained from Castle instead of Nobles' Court, ensuring that Magyars can train super-units without restrictions on build queues.

Weaknesses:

Poor defensive capability of cavalry means lack of flexibility in Hungarian cavalry and a less resilient army, if swarmed by heavy cavalry.

This is clearly a civ not made for turtling or diplomacy (notably because like the Bohemians Hungary can only build a Grand Cathedral) but for one thing - and that is rushing. With multiple abilities and units that are fast on the march, Hungary is an extremely powerful faction, compared to others. The Magyar war machine's ability to traverse great spaces with its cavalry lineup - (consisting of Kisérét medium cavalry, Várispán lancers, Javelin Cavalry, Horse Archers) shouldn't be underestimated, given the Hungarian ability of assimilating conquered cities faster than anyone else.

Although the Hungarian army is seen as having a strong cavalry arm, the true heroes of your hordes will be your siege weapons. it. In siege warfare, Hungary is king — free Trebuchets mean that pesky enemy Rams need not get your cities, while you can pelt theirs into submission.  Your initial Magyars and Várispán lancers are more medium cavalry than heavy, given their lower HP penalty, but this belies the fact that they have added speed and attack, thus Hungarian heavy cavalry is best trained in large numbers and used for flanking attacks. Keep your cavalry in reserve until your opponent exposes his or her flank, and then move them in to exploit The cheaper Peasants and faster assimilation time also means that Hungary is also capable of strategic expansion through warfare.

Unique units and structures gallery

Várispán Lancer
Hungarian unique mid-tier shock cavalry with a very powerful attack trained from the Castle instead of the Meeting House/Palace; very devastating especially if attacking from the flank.

Brother-Knight
Powerful sword infantry trained from a Nobles' Court for most Latin Christian factions; can boost armour of nearby friendly units.

Kisérét
Hungarian unique shock cavalry with a very powerful attack; highly useful for raiding and defending against enemy cavalry (particularly by flanking them) in the early game.

Horse Archer
Weak but fast light cavalry unit armed with a medium-ranged missile attack, highly suited for raiding and countering melee infantry but easily cut down by cavalry or massed archers.

Genoese Crossbowmen
Powerful mercenary Italian crossbowmen, available to the enemies of Venexia (being Hungary, the Germans and the Eastern Roman Empire).

Militia
Light melee infantry which is affordable but rather weak; useful against enemy spears, siege weapons and buildings.

Citadel
As in The Hellenistic Era, the Citadel (alongside its weaker counterpart, the Guard Tower) continues to be the most powerful form of point defence in this instalment in the Kings & Conquerors family of mods.

Nobles' Court
Sumptuous and stately yet foreboding, the Nobles' Court is the ultimate expression of regnal power, consisting of a vast castellated estate around which the nobility of the land must rally around. It is not as cheap as a Mansion nor as easy to come by, but its ability to boost the size of your Territory around it, and the fact that it is immensely powerful as a point defence structure means that a Nobles' Court can be more than capable of defending your borders, whilst training some of the most powerful land units available in all of this mod.

Fortified Barracks
Stronger than a normal Barracks, this building may be weaker than most point defence structures, but it is nevertheless a useful way to quickly set up and reinforce a forward building operation against any enemy counterstrike.

Peasants' Hovel
Trains levy units for sedentary agrarian nations. Not available for Outremer, Qara Khitai, Khamag Mongol, or Polovtsy.
